Fathers Day 2018: A Luxury Gift Guide

0
0

For Father’s Day 2018, we suggest you go classic with gifting. Luggage that functions as well as it flatters, a kayak modeled on a classic car and stationery that begs for a return to penmanship are just the ticket

Do away with throwaway gifts this Fathers Day and buy something that will be cherished for years to come. From a special limited-edition timepiece to state-of-the-art playthings for adventure-seekers and simple, scent-infused luxuries for the home office, there’s the perfect gift out there for a special dad.

The dial of the LM SE by MB&F is set against a hand-frosted finish usually associated with antique pocket watches.

Time machine

MB&F doesn’t make watches, it makes machines. The Swiss company recently unveiled the fifth in its series of Legacy Machines—the LM SE. The “SE” stands for “Split Escapement,” a technical idiosyncrasy that allows the signature flying balance wheel (if you love timepieces, you’ll know what this is) to stand alone, floating above the watch face. Under this wheel are three sub-dials displaying the time, the power reserve, and the date. The edition, with an 18-karat white gold case, is limited to just 18 pieces.

The oars of the Monocoque Paddle Canoe tuck away on the side as a homage to the fins on a Cadillac.

Push the boat out

Next time you think about sailing off into the sunset, leave the superyacht at home and hop onto BorromeodeSilva’s sleek Monocoque Paddle Canoe. Combining old-world technique with modern materials—including copper woven-carbon fiber that glistens in the sunlight—the streamlined, one-off craft features a hand-laid teak surface and fins, inspired by vintage Cadillacs, on which to store its oars. “We wanted to showcase our ability to mix traditional craftsmanship and highly technical processes and materials,” says the Italian design studio. It is currently working on integrating a small electric motor into the design, which may “take it from a single piece to industrialization.”

With an unbreakable shell and integrated USB ports, Arlo Skye’s luggage collection takes some of the stress out of international travel.

Bags of style

Proof positive that your luggage really can make a statement comes in the shape of Arlo Skye’s latest collaboration, designed with the team behind online tastemakers Sight Unseen. As Arlo Skye’s chief design officer Denielle Wolfe observes: “This is a collection for creatives cruising through cities like Milan for the Salone del Mobile, Miami for Art Basel, or London for the Design Festival.” The pieces, made from lightweight makrolon polycarbonate, feature whisper-quiet wheels, a one-touch opening system, and interior linings by graphic designer Antti Kekki. The carry-on comes with an integrated portable charger with two fast-charging USB ports.

The sleek, sporty design of the BMW i8 Roadster is matched by its advanced technical specifications.

Electric warrior

The open-top, plug-in BMW i8 Roadster hybrid arrived in showrooms this spring, promising sports-car performance coupled with the efficiency of an electric vehicle. The sleek two-seater blends a roadster’s classic stylings with exclusive paintwork colorways, and its digital instrument cluster allows drivers to take advantage of BMW ConnectedDrive. Billed as a “personal mobility companion,” the app-based system can estimate travel times, warn of delays, text contacts on your behalf, and even honk your car’s horn or flash its lights for you.

Caran D’Ache’s stylish set of pencils is delicately fragranced with patchouli, incense and tonka bean.

Good point

Next time you want to get your idea down on paper, try one of these lightly scented pencils from Caran D’Ache. Working with Geneva-based perfume house Mizensir, the Swiss company has created a set of four pencils whose lacquer is infused with “Tibetan Wood” fragrance, a blend of patchouli, incense and tonka bean. There are four HB pencils in the set, one in western hemlock, one in white oak, one in white ash, and one in silver teak.

Berry Bros & Rudd’s Dry London Gin gets its distinctive flavor from juniper, and a combination oranges, grapefruit, and angelica root from Spain, and coriander seed, and cardamom pods from Morocco.

Spirit of revival

The United Kingdom’s oldest wine and spirit merchant, Berry Bros. & Rudd, has announced the return of its historic own-label gin. First developed in 1909, Berrys’ Best, as its London Dry Gin was known, has been recreated by a team of distillers using a single vial of the original formula dating back to the 1950s.

World’s Most Picturesque Golf Courses

0

Bay Harbor Golf Club in Michigan

Bay Harbor Golf Club in Michigan features three distinctive and varied courses along Lake Michigan’s coastline.

Explore the World’s Most Picturesque Golf Courses

There are more than 30,000 golf courses in the world, so choosing the best is difficult to narrow down. Is it Augusta National in Georgia, home of the Masters? Le Golf National outside Paris, the location of this year’s Ryder Cup in September? Bellerive Country Club in Missouri, which hosts the 100th PGA Championship in August? Or somewhere else entirely? Find your favorite on our list.

1. Bay Harbor Golf Club
Michigan, USA

Bay Harbor overlooks Lake Michigan’s Little Traverse Bay, offering three nine-hole courses—Links, Quarry, and Preserve—carved out of a former shale quarry. Beware the hardwood trees, which have been known to cause unwanted ricochets as you make your way down the fairway, and instead savor the immaculate greens, dramatic gorges, and luxurious lakefront.

“What makes Bay Harbor special is its setup; the course is split into three nine-hole courses, and each one is totally unique,” says Jeff Wellman, owner of North Harbor Real Estate, the exclusive affiliate of Christie’s International Real Estate in the area.

2. Pinehurst
North Carolina, USA

Pinehurst Golf Course

Founded in 1895, Pinehurst has hosted more golf championships than any other club in the country. There are nine courses set amid pine forests.

Arnold Palmer’s “golf capital of the world” was among the first US golf resorts. It now boasts nine courses including No. 2, which was designed by Donald Ross, opened in 1907, and has hosted the U.S. Open several times. The infamous Maniac Hill practice ground at Pinehurst sees an estimated 18,432 balls in play at any one time.

“Course 2 at Pinehurst is considered one of America’s great golf courses,” says Reed Jackson, managing partner at Ivester Jackson, the exclusive affiliate of Christie’s International Real Estate in North Carolina.

3. Kiawah Island Golf Resort
South Carolina, USA

Kiawah Island Golf Resort

With a total of 90 holes designed by some of the golfing world’s greatest names, Kiawah Island Golf Resort was designed so the natural environment plays into the difficulty of the course.

Pete and Alice Dye’s Ocean Course played host to the dramatic 1991 Ryder Cup and will stage the 2021 PGA Championship. There are five courses, but its the Ocean—with its seaside setting, natural flora, daunting sand traps, and shifting winds—that builds up an appetite for a post-round crispy shrimp in chili sauce in the salubrious Atlantic Room.

“Kiawah Island Golf Resort is number one in South Carolina—and with good reason,” says Drew Grossklaus, sales director at William Means Real Estate, LLC, the exclusive affiliate of Christie’s International Real Estate in the region.

4. St Andrews
Scotland, UK

“The Home of Golf,” St Andrews

“The Home of Golf,” St Andrews boasts 600 years of history, with the Old Course home to the iconic Swilcan Bridge and Hell Bunker.

The Old Course at St Andrews is often called the Home of Golf. The Valley of Sin, Granny Clark’s Wynd, and the Swilcan Bridge are unforgettable golfing experiences on this course, which also offers breathtaking views towards the iconic 1853 Royal & Ancient clubhouse and the North Sea.

“St Andrews is the quintessential home of golf, and the Old Course is seen as iconic to anyone who plays golf, regardless of their abilities or handicap,” says Kevin Maley, director of Strutt & Parker, Inverness, the UK’s exclusive affiliate of Christie’s International Real Estate.

5. Liberty National Golf Club
New Jersey, USA

Liberty National golf course in New Jersey

The 18-hole Liberty National course in New Jersey makes the most of the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty.

As urban golf courses go, Liberty National has to be one of the best: $250 million was invested in its creation. Located in New Jersey, just 3 miles (4.8 km) from New York City across the Hudson River, the club is so well located that golfers can arrive by helicopter or private speedboat from Manhattan.

6. Old Head Golf Links
Kinsale, Ireland

Old Head Golf Links in Kinsale

Located on a rugged headland that stretches into the Atlantic Ocean, Old Head Golf Links in Kinsale is surrounded by dramatic cliffs.

Old Head is often likened to Pebble Beach, but with less sunshine. Green fees include a spectacular 220-acre (89 ha) diamond-shaped headland and the country’s most select course right on the Atlantic Ocean.

“The setting of Old Head is truly spectacular, even by Irish golf course standards. It occupies an elevated peninsula and, as a result, enjoys 270-degree uninterrupted sea views,” says Simon Ensor, chairman at Sherry FitzGerald, Christie’s International Real Estate’s exclusive affiliate in Ireland.

7. Oitavos Dunes
Cascais, Portugal

Oitavos , one of Europe’s most spectacular golf courses

On a plot of land formerly composed of sand dunes and pine forests, Oitavos is one of Europe’s most spectacular courses. Photograph: Getty Images

Although the well-known Praia del Rey in Portugal is a great course with top-class facilities, the Silver Coast’s Oitavos Dunes is less busy and provides the same exclusive experience.

Under an hour from Lisbon, near the Sintra Mountains, the challenging par 71 course skirts the Atlantic and is close to Cabo da Roca, continental Europe’s most westerly point. Situated at what was once believed by Europeans to be the end of the world, its situation is undeniably awe-inspiring.

8. Pebble Beach Golf Links
California, USA

Pebble Beach golf course

Pebble Beach, the top public golf course in America, will host the 2019 U.S. Open Championship.

Many would argue that you can’t call yourself a true golfer until you’ve felt the Pacific spray at Stillwater Cove and negotiated Arrowhead Point on California’s Monterey Peninsula. The course is home to events such as the prestigious Concours d’Elegance, of which Christie’s International Real Estate is a sponsor [and Oliver Luxury Real Estate will be attending]. The annual event, set this year for August 26, is a magnet for car collectors from around the world, who  gather to demonstrate their classic vehicles’ style and elegance in a now-legendary competition.

Guide to New York City

New York, New York

A Visitor’s Guide to New York City’s Must-See Places

Take in New York’s memorable vistas, scintillating history, and architectural wonder on this tour of the city and its nearby celebrated structures.

A few blocks from Rockefeller Center, Manhattan’s most celebrated buildings guard intriguing secrets. Beloved of locals and visitors alike, these seven iconic locations have earned their place in the history books.

The Rainbow Room, New York, New York

The Rainbow Room on the 65th floor of Rockefeller Center in New York City offers some of the most exhilarating views of Manhattan.

1. Rainbow Room
On the 65th floor of the storied Rockefeller Center, the Rainbow Room has unbeatable views of the Manhattan skyline from its floor-to-ceiling rectangular windows, and has hosted many a starry soirée since it first opened its doors in 1934.

Major renovations were undertaken from 2009-2014 to preserve the ceiling dome, revolving dance floor, and dramatic staircase, which are all now protected under the Landmarks Preservation Commission. The room owes its unusual name to an organ installed when it first opened, which reflected light around the room in a kaleidoscope of colors. Today the effect is re-created with the use of custom-made crystal curtains.

The Cloisters, New York, New York

The Met Cloisters in Upper Manhattan, owned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, brings Medieval European architecture into New York City. It houses more than 2,000 historic artworks and architectural elements.

2. The Met Cloisters
Located in Upper Manhattan’s Fort Tryon Park—which served as a battleground in the Revolutionary War—The Met Cloisters, a branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, might be one of the most historically intriguing and also palliative places in the whole of Manhattan.

Dedicated to Medieval and Gothic art, the five cloisters were imported from France and reconstructed here between 1935 and 1938. The site’s beautiful courtyard gardens alone are worth the 45-minute drive from Midtown, but to gaze upon the collection of beguiling wool and silk tapestries, which depict a hunt for the mythical unicorn, is one of the finer ways to spend an afternoon in the city.

The Beekman, New York, New York

Resurrected after years of abandonment, the bar at The Beekman hotel in Lower Manhattan is now a fashionable place for New York City residents to meet.

3. The Beekman
One of the first skyscrapers to be constructed on Manhattan Island, 5 Beekman Street, or Temple Court as it was previously known, was originally home to Temple Theatre, which premiered Shakespeare’s Hamlet to the United States in 1881. It was later used as offices until a fire ripped through the building, and today its 19th-century sandstone façade belies a stunning interior: a nine-story atrium has been restored to its former glory, complete with wrought-iron dragon motifs, original tiles, and intricately decorated balustrades. Two restaurants and a basement speakeasy bar have turned it into a place to see and be seen.

Grand Central Terminal, New York, New York

Grand Central Terminal, on Manhattan’s 42nd Street, is a world-renowned feat of engineering and architectural splendor, and is designated a US National Historic Landmark. Photograph: Getty.

4. Grand Central Terminal
Built over a period of 10 years, from 1903-1913, Grand Central Terminal is certainly one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. The largest construction in New York City at the time, the train station covers 48 acres (19.4 ha) and, when first built, featured 4,000 exposed lightbulbs—a demonstration of a feat of electrical engineering and the status of the building’s original owners, the Vanderbilt family.

The building and its decorative elements have been restored several times over the years, the celestial ceiling mural and famed Oyster Bar still holding court more than 100 years after they were installed.

Katz's Delicatessen, New York, New York

Katz’s Delicatessen on East Houston Street in New York’s Lower East Side has been in business since 1888, and has appeared in movies including When Harry Met Sally. Photograph: Katz’s Delicatessen.

5. Katz’s Delicatessen
Serving up salt beef sandwiches and pickles since 1888, Katz’s Delicatessen is as at home on this Manhattan icons list as it is in the hearts of New Yorkers, who flock here in their hundreds daily. Located on East Houston Street, the deli has had many owners, but its signage and decor have remained the same since the beginning.

Inside, the faces of famous customers line the walls, from the time of the Lower East Side’s Yiddish theatre boom to today, and a collection of neon signs and wartime slogans—”Senda salami to your boy in the army”—hang from the ceiling.

The High Line, New York, New York

The High Line in Manhattan’s Chelsea district opened in 2009 on the site of a disused elevated railway track, and offers a verdant place to relax above the busyness of the city streets. Photograph: Alamy.

6. The High Line
Built on a disused freight line by architecture firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro, the High Line is part public park, part art walk, and part culinary destination, spanning 1.45 miles (2.33km) from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District to West 34th Street. As well as the elevated walkway flanked on either side by Piet Oudolf’s stunning wild gardens, there are intermittent viewing platforms and spaces that showcase performances and art installations.

The route snakes through a section of Chelsea Market that once housed the National Biscuit Company—now home to the High Line’s food hall—along bridges and spurs and even through a small forest in the Meatpacking District. It’s one of the city’s modern marvels, offering a beautiful break in the frenetic cityscape.

Darlington Mansion, New York, New York

Palatial Darlington—on the market with Special Properties Real Estate Services, LLC, the exclusive affiliate of Christie’s International Real Estate in the region—was originally completed in 1907 for businessman and socialite George Crocker, and is within 25 miles of New York City. Extensive renovations completed in 2015 brought the Jacobean-style estate up to date for 21st-century living.

7. Darlington, New York Metro Mansion
Just 40 minutes from Manhattan, Darlington Mansion offers a rare opportunity to own one of New York’s most iconic buildings, often referred to by architectural enthusiasts as the American Versailles.

This 58-room, three-story mansion in Mahwah, New Jersey is listed with both the National Register of Historic Places and the New Jersey Register of Historic Places, and is the location of the welcome reception for affiliates visiting New York for the Christie’s International Real Estate Luxury Specialist Conference 2018.

Modeled on an English castle, the estate sits within 12 acres (4.85 ha) of grounds. Notable highlights include a library with a 15-foot (4.6-m) ceiling mural by James Wall Finn, a wine cellar, luxury spa, and an elegant formal dining space among its many remarkable attributes.

Building in Tahoe/Truckee Made Easy

Thanks to the success of nine Sagemodern projects in Truckee and Squaw Valley, building custom luxury homes in the area just got easier.  Sagemodern is a San Francisco based, pre-fabricated home design and building manufacturer. Specializing in green and sustainable architecture, their luxury modern factory homes are custom built, eco friendly, and energy efficient.

Considering the short building season in the Tahoe/Truckee region, the Sagemodern advantage is clear: shorter on-site building time, better construction and higher quality materials.

The prefab approach enables homes to be built in the factory while site work is being completed.  The average completion time from start of construction to move-in is roughly six months, compared to an average completion time of about 12 to 18 months for a custom site-built home. The schedule is also more predictable because of the elimination of weather delays, reliable labor force and the use of inventory management systems. Homes are inspected at the factory which reduces the potential for inspection delays. On site construction activity is reduced to just a few weeks compared to months or years for a traditional site built home.  This is great for you and your neighbors!

The Pre-fab Difference

What is Pre-fab? Pre-fab homes are regulated by local and state building regulations.  They have the look and feel of a site built home except that the home was delivered as module, craned and then set on a permanent foundation. Modular homes differ in that they are designed and built as modules and are either assembled in the factory or onsite.  Prefab homes are prefabricated in a factory and then delivered almost 100% complete. Not to be confused with Kit housing, which is an assemblage of precut and itemized materials that are shipped to the site and then the pieces of the kit area assembled on site to build the home. Kit housing then has the same time-frame and weather damage vulnerability as traditional on site building.

Higher Quality Engineering, Materials & Sustainability

The factory process follows strict quality control measures and eliminates weather related material damage. Quality control measures are continuously monitored during factory construction ensuring all material requirements are cut and assemble to precision. Homes are over engineered in order that they can be transported and thus are structurally superior. Sagemodern utilizes design, materials and systems that reduce impact on the environment. Passive design strategies reduce energy usage by appropriate use of natural light, shading, and passive heating and cooling. Materials are chosen for their durability, manufacturing impact and location, as well as their beauty and classic design sensibility. Renewable energy systems are used when possible as well as choosing efficient and properly sized mechanical systems to heat and cool your home. Low flow fixtures, on-demand recirculating hot water systems, and incorporating graywater and rainwater catchment systems when possible all reduce environmental impact and energy usage.

Lower Costs

Labor costs are typically 5-15% lower because the homes are built in an efficient factory environment with tools and equipment readily available, as well as often being located in less expensive labor markets. By design, a Sagemodern home will be less expensive to build and operate then a comparable site built home.  The systems selected are appropriately sized for the home and climate and homes are designed to minimize their environmental impact. The assembly process enables modular homes to reduce construction waste by up to 70%.  This saves money and is better for the environment. Large manufacturing facilities are able to reduce costs by purchasing material in bulk. Costs are more predictable because up to 70% of the construction is completed in the factory. Financing costs during construction are reduced by 25-40% because the time you pay interest during construction has been cut in half.

Where can I build?

Sagemodern has successfully built homes in Truckee and Squaw Valley. Already proving their modern-mountain luxury design aesthetic, snow-load engineering and compliancy with all local building agencies. To learn more about Sagemodern, please visit their website.  To tour a Sagemodern home, you can contact them directly or set an appointment now with David Gemme.
